Save Spruce Knob - Say NO to HCR 33

This resolution proposes renaming Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia, to "Trump Mountain" in honor of former President Donald J. Trump. However, Spruce Knob has long been an important natural landmark, representing the state’s rich geography, history, and outdoor heritage. It is part of the Monongahela National Forest, a cherished destination for hikers, nature lovers, and conservationists. The name "Spruce Knob" reflects the mountain’s unique ecology, characterized by its high-altitude spruce trees and rugged Appalachian landscape.

Renaming it for a political figure, regardless of their influence, risks overshadowing the deep cultural and environmental significance of the area. Public lands should remain free from partisan affiliations to ensure they continue to unite, rather than divide, the people who appreciate them. West Virginia has a long history of preserving its natural beauty and heritage, and Spruce Knob’s name should remain unchanged as a tribute to the state’s enduring landscapes and the generations who have cherished them.
